We brought home Sugar Baby (the dark girl) and Sweet Tart (the mainly white girl) yesterday from Beaver Tree Farm. They are sweet little girls and we're thrilled to have them for our breeding program. That's a little ways off yet, though.

We are SO full of kittens right now! And it's not our fault, really!!! The ladies over at Augusta Aviation found the two kittens that I'm holding in the above picture. They had been abandoned in the MIDDLE of the highway. They are cute and fuzzy and extremely friendly. We've named the striped guy Copperfield and the gray is named Houdini. The little magicians managed to get out of their cage with the door closed the first night we had them. Sweet little buggers! The tiny cream kitten is being kept in mom's house and has to be fed almost every half hour it seems like. Josh found him at his place in the wood pile with no family and almost starved to death. We think he's about two to three weeks old. I'm trying to convince my cat, Speck, that we could certainly have another kitty! He's seriously feisty, this little one is! There's a land of beginning again Where skies are always blue; Though we've made mistakes, that's true, Let's forget the past and start life anew. Though we wander by a river of tears Where sunshine won't come through, Let's find that paradise where sorrow can't live And learn the teachings of forget and forgive In the land of beginning again Where broken dreams come true. Rosie, Aimee and I got a chance to go on a little ride Saturday morning and it was our first "on farm" trail ride with Sally and Moon Pie, since we only got them on Wednesday! I was very pleased with how they are settling in and thoroughly enjoyed my romp around on Pie. She neck reins like a champ and is very responsive to kisses and clucks. I look forward to longer and more intensive rides as she builds both fat and muscle. Sally was a good girl, too, and I think Rosie is smitten! We headed down to Grammy and Papa's in the meadow and rode around there a good bit and out Meadow Lane which reminded me of rides I used to take way back when. Grammy snapped these pictures off of her porch and was kind enough to share. I think we have good times ahead! Can't wait for Rosie and Aimee to get back from camp because they're great riding buddies! We have had a pretty exciting week at the farm! It started last Friday evening with a trip to Waynesboro to pick up our two new rabbits! We have since learned that they are about a year to a year and a half old and that Hoss (the big one) is a female and that Feffer (the smaller one with the fuzzy face) is a male. This worries me, but I'm trying not to think about it! Our week continued Saturday morning with a trip to Thomson for the CSEA Fun Day Horse Show where Mom and I got to see Andrea & Angel Rodriguez of Rancho Loma Linda and several of their Peruvians. I was very happy to see them again; they are great people and a lot of fun! We watched her two students, Jade and Jo, compete in several of the classes on Vastago and Brisa, and also got to know the rest of their family a little bit. We named them the "J" family because all of their names started with a "J." It was fun, but HOT out there in the sun! We also ran into Becky Barton and Angie Hubbard of HOOF. Congrats on the blue ribbon, Angie! The pictures below are of the horse show. Then, on Wednesday morning, our two new horses were delivered! Uncle Steve and family brought Sally to us. She's a 10ish year old Tennessee Walking Horse type mare in a gorgeous strawberry roan color with flaxen mane and tail. She's a little shy around men, but I'm sure will settle in as she learns to trust us. I bought Moon Pie, a little QH lady, because she's a sweetheart that I couldn't resist. She's very thin and needs some weight, but is a total love bug. Jason says he will feel very comfortable trotting around on the trails with her. We're spending our hot evenings hosing down the other three to wash off the salt and sweat and making friends with the new girls. Mom and I usually get drenched in the process, which is pretty fun all around! My big event of yesterday was very touching to me, although seemingly minor probably to everybody else. I've been working to gain Sassy's trust and friendship over the last 4 months and she surprised me last night. We were behind Gran's house getting ready to rinse all the horses off and I needed to catch her, but she was across the pasture, so I called to her. I stood and watched and called and she came to me from way over the field and let me halter her without any qualms. This is a first for us, and a real breakthrough! I'm thankful. What a wonderful way to lead off a weekend! I got this this picture from Grammy Gay today and had to share it! I'm thrilled that Papa has a little garden going, and for sure I know that I can't even keep a fake plant alive, as I was reminded earlier today, so that makes it even more special... She says that she used the pepper in her Spanish rice that she made for lunch and that the tomatoes are starting to turn. I think everybody down there is looking forward to a good tomato. Way to go, Papa! Everybody needs a little stress relief and yesterday evening's ride was exactly that for me, and I think also for Uncle Steve. We are keeping our eyes open for a horse to bring to the farm so that we will have four that can go out on the trail. A quiet, calm, well-trained horse. We went and looked at "Sally" yesterday. She's a 10 year old Tennessee Walking Horse mare that Uncle Steve found in an ad online and went to ride last week. He liked her and we went back yesterday to take her for a group trail ride. She did pretty well and is on the list of horses being considered. Either way the cookie crumbles, it was a nice ride and I quite adored the little mare that I was on. Calm and relaxing! Well, Sunday, May 30, was my last time feeding Pancakes his nightly bottle of milk. He's weaned now and eating grain and hay like the rest of the babies, but even though he's healthy and happy it makes me a little sad. I'll miss his adoring caramel browns staring up at me adoringly while he siphons down his dinner. Sure, he's still a cuddly bundle of fun, but now he's a growing up cuddly bundle of fun. He's been my "kid" and I keep wanting to sneak him milk behind Mom's back. Shhhh! Nobody tell her! |
