The trees are angry today,
Creaking and twisting
Though there is no wind –
Their heads bowed with the
Weight of crystalline ice
And dripping rime.
Cracking and popping with
Limbs crashing to the ground
Like shaggy behemoths
Felled in the snow.
Sleet like sandpaper grit
Reddens my face as I
Watch the trees and
Mourn their losses;
Slipping and sliding
On the hill while
Young goats
Play catch with
Snowflakes.

The aftermath is sunshine,
Warm and clear and
Breezy,
But the bright scents of
Pine and evergreen
Still fill the air like
Leftover Christmas
Candles.
A war zone out there -
Highlighted in sharp relief
By almost spring warm
Washes of cloudless
Light.
Twisted branches,
Mounded pine needles,
Whole oaks sacrificed on
The altar of here today and
Gone tomorrow -
Ice.
A tornado without wind and
Land mines from the sky
Have given way to stunning
Beauty glistening
Above absolute
Horror.
