I close my eyes and see the dance in the my mind,
Though I can only hear it through the office window:
The birds hopping across the ground and
Flitting “quick as a wink” into the air
As they chirp and tweet and sing.
The chickens sak-aw and skree while pecking corn
And bugs and hay in the yard.
Squirrels chitter-chatter and climb circles around the trees,
Hopping from bird feeder to bird feeder –
Thieving little fuzz-butts!
Bees, wasps and dragonflies are humming and
Winging their way to wherever it is that
Bees, wasps and dragonflies go in the early spring.
All I can clearly tell is that they are busy –
Like me.
But the ivy and kudzu leaves on the old oak by the window
Are rustling – I can hear it.
And sharp little teeth munching –
I can hear that, too.
And, oh!
To be in the grass in the shade by that tree with a book –
But now is not the time for dancing,
And back to working I go.
